Abu Ishaq al-Tha’labi is a great Quranic commentator from
Nishabour in the fourth and fifth centuries. His commentary entitled
“Al-Kashf wa’l Bayan `an Tafsir al-Quran” has played a significant
role in the itinerary of writing theological books as well as Quranic
exegesis in late centuries. Reviewing al-Tha’libi’s scientific,
cultural life shortly and introducing his works briefly, the present
essay introduces his most significant work, i.e., his Quranic
commentary, including a survey of his sources as well as his
method, an explanation of status of al-Kashf wa’l Bayan in the
Quranic exegesis, and judgments of Islamic scholars concerning
that commentary.
